Get your thinking cap on! We are going to start with a little math problem:
- If More Water= More $$$
- And More $$$= Sadness
- Then Less Water= Less $$$= Happiness?
That is correct! The more water you save, the less money you spend and the happier you are! Here are some tips to help you conserve water and lower your utilities bill:
Full Loads Only
You don’t want to overload the washing machine or dishwasher, but you can’t afford to underload them either. In your washing machine’s owner’s manual, there will be a specified load size for small, medium and large settings. If a load only meets the requirements for medium, there is no need to use the same amount of water that a large load asks for. As for the dishwasher, stop rinsing dishes before you rack them. This running water is a total waste and if it is hot, you’re also using an unnecessary amount of gas and electricity. Trust your dishwasher to get the job done solo style!
Upgrade Toilets, Faucets and Showerheads
Right around the turn of the century, lawmakers started requiring bathroom fixture manufacturers to meet certain standards. For example, toilets made before 1994 use around 4 gallons of water per flush. Units made in 2010 or later use only 1.6 gallons! This drastic difference could be costing you big bucks if you’re still stuck in the past. While you’re upgrading the john, you might want to go all out and include your showerheads and faucets as well.
In the NYC area, there isn’t a ton of lawn to water, but you could still benefit from watering more efficiently. You want to set your sprinklers to turn on in the early morning so that they aren’t fighting the most intense heat. If you have them on at noon, most of the water they are using is going to evaporate before it reaches the soil.
